the musicians’ house
The architectural design work I do is contemporary. Yet I respect and enjoy engaging with solidly built historical structures. For a building to survive for over a century in the dynamic economic and social conditions of the US is a rare feat.
When Marcus and Annalisa bought their house in East Walnut Hills it looked like a find. A mansion, with a formal street entrance and third floor service quarters accessible through a separate staircase, it had been split up into four apartment units. We embarked on a profound, tiring, year long remodel which was more than compensated by the grandeur of the final result. It produced a residence for them and their daughter, and a separate attic unit which accommodates their frequent guests and music collaborators, or is rented through AirBnB. Valuable discoveries were made during the demolition. The owners’ patience and uncompromising taste were validated with an enviable combination of contemporary amenities and traditional comfort.
